The Apple Vision Pro’s cheaper little brother

The less expensive successor to the Apple Vision Pro will "likely" do away with the external display to help it achieve an internally-discussed price between $1,500 and $2,500, Mark Gurman writes in today's Power On newsletter for Bloomberg. Gurman also reiterates what he said in June: the less expensive model will likely use an iPhone-grade chip, have fewer cameras, and receive screens with lower resolutions.

Apple would lock one of the Vision Pro's standout features, EyeSight, behind the paywall of the more expensive options if it did away with the external display. When you talk to someone, you can see an instant rendering of their eyes thanks to a device called EyeSight. This allows you to quickly determine whether they are paying attention to you or are otherwise distracted.

According to Gurman, Apple diverted resources away from its technically difficult AR glasses project in order to prioritize releasing a more affordable version.

There is nothing "cheap" about the price range Apple is allegedly discussing, though $1,500 is undoubtedly more appealing. However, whether $2,500 feels like a sufficient discount will likely depend on whether an iPhone chip and other hardware alterations can deliver a positive software experience. Particularly if the business hopes to attract clients who haven't yet decided whether they want this kind of thing in their lives — a problem that isn't specific to Apple.
