Meta's new
With the v63 software update, which is now being distributed, owners of Meta's Quest 2 or Pro headsets can activate a setting that permits their headset to function while they are lying down.
Early in the year, Meta tested lying down mode in a public preview. However, the feature was removed before the v53 update was released to the general public. "It shall make a comeback," as Meta executive Mark Rabkin promised a user in January, and now it's back—at least as an experimental option that Meta may modify or remove later.
Many users, particularly those with medical conditions that make wearing a headset while upright for extended periods of time painful or impossible, were upset when it was removed following the test. It might not affect other users as much because most headsets advise sitting or standing up to avoid nausea and other unpleasant symptoms.
Although users have come up with inventive ways to get the Quest 3 headsets to function while lying down, there is no word on whether those headsets will also have the accessibility feature. In addition to functioning in low light, Apple's Vision Pro headsets can also be used in a supine position.
The Quest headset's lying down mode can be accessed by users by going to the Experimental Settings tab under the Settings menu and choosing "Use Apps While Lying Down."
Quest Cash, a payment method for the Meta Quest store that will debut later this month, is also a part of the software update. Quest Cash is marketed as a way for parents to let their children buy apps for themselves in a way that is easily monitored and has a built-in budget cap. Users can buy Quest Cash for themselves or as gifts.
